The chapter starts off with Joe and Simon leaving the cave that they luckily found in the previous chapter, they both keep on heading up towards the summit making steady progress. Simon ends up falling down the mountain first but because Simon and joe are attached to each other Joe can pull him back up the mountain, they both still seem to still be able to laugh about the situation.
The evening starts to fall and tension builds, Joe starts to fear the journey for the first time. Joe and Simon find a snow hole and dig it up situated just below the summit, they both stay there until the morning to climb the rest when it is less dangerous.
They both set off in the morning but danger comes their way as they both walk across a ridge and Simon falls but is able to recover, the chapter ends with Joe contemplating how if the situation was even more dangerous at that point, they could have both been killed.
