Mr Waugh – IGCSE – Now and Then – draft (Not Complete)

Theatre – a building or outdoor area in which plays and other dramatic performances are given. In other words a place where for many dreams come true.

The foyer, the area where your adventure starts, where you see the people buy their Merchandise and programme from the stewards who you can see enjoy their jobs all followed by the bar where people have their pre show drinks and then enter the auditorium

The auditorium, the centrefold of the theatre, where the magic starts, again where the stewards go around the theatre selling programmes to people who may of missed their first oppuntintly back in the foyer, you feel like the eyes of the theatre looking out towards the heart of the theatre where the nervous performers are hiding behind the curtain. Excited to perform the musical they have taken months to reherse.

You can smell the fear and excitement in the au from both backstage and in the audience as anything can go wrong at anytime. You can hear each individual voice with excitement of what follows the curtain going up, as it is nearly time for curtain call the atmosphere becomes more tense until you hear a sound from a member of staff saying the shows about to start which follows by the lights diming and a musical overture starts which is followed by the inevitable rise of the curtain.

Theatre – A dark desolate place where no one is seen in plain sight.

The Foyer, Nobody life is left, The only light comes from a flickering single street lamp from outside the theatre

    Hi Lethaniel,

This piece has some great material in it. I’d encourage you to remove the parts where you tell us what to think, for example: “In other words a place where for many dreams come true.”

Instead I’d encourage you to allow the description of the place itself to communicate that idea. In a piece of descriptive writing like this, the choice of detail and the way things are described can also infer a whole lot of other information about what is happening, has happened, and what the writer/narrator feels about what they’re expressing.

How can a description of a room show excitement? One that is described through the eyes of one who is excited…

I’m a little uncertain about what the second timeframe represents? An empty theatre? Who is telling this, if it’s empty?

React!
