The final chapter starts off with Joe still trying to get back to camp. He can smell human excrement but can’t see any tents so he believes that his friends are gone. Joe calls out Simons name but no one comes. Richard hears a voice call out but shrugs the voice off because the voice sounds like Joe and he’s apparently dead. As time goes on Simon wakes up and they investigate the voice coming from outside. Joe sees Simon in the distance and continues to call out, they both see each other and share the stories and assure each other that they are not to blame.
When morning comes up they decide that they have to get to a doctor soon so that Joe leg can be checked up on. Simon goes and tries to find a camel from a nearby family and then they make their way to a nearby town called Cajatambo where they hire a pick-up truck where they go to the hospital in the Peruvian capital, Lima. On the way, they pick up a man with two smashed legs. Two days later Joe gets his leg amputated.
