Touching the void – Chapter 8 (Silent Witness) Summary

The scene centres around Simon just after he cuts the rope that was connected to Joe, he is swiftly continuing down the mountain, contemplating what he has just done and how people will see him when he gets back to home and how Richard will view him if he tells the truth about what really happened. He becomes angry because Joe breaking his leg means that it was inevitable for conflict to occur.

Simon goes down the mountain and checks for Joe, but he can’t see Joe, his suspicion is that Joe must have died. As he continues abseiling down the mountain he contemplates whether or not he would be better off lying about what happened to Joe towards Richard to save any mass hatred towards him for cutting the rope like Joe’s parent’s may feel about Simon cutting the rope.

When he gets down the mountain he decides not to tell Richard what happened but when he sees him, the story comes out. Richard reassures Simon on his decision and he goes to sleep. He is now down the mountain. Joe is still on the mountain presumed dead.

Note: This is Simons Point of view from Joe’s Perspective of what he thinks of the events and how Simon would interpret the descent down the mountain.
