Miss Andrews & Mr Waugh -Semantic Fields in To Kill A Mockingbird – 24/4/15 – Page 232

The Use Of Semantic Fields are completely present in To Kill A Mockingbird and on page 232 they are present in the courtroom scene in various ways. Firstly their are some word patterns in this peice of text like the usage of the words like: Empty, Creeping & Deserted all representing a darker presents in this by showing a demented version of Maycomb where everybody is sitting down or standing up in same situation being the sentencing of Tom Robinson Apparent rape on a white woman. The space in maycomb is also represented as well with words like empty and deserted or even crowded also being referenced in the passage aswell. These words also bring a disturbed aspect to the peice aswell with the feeling of despair and emptiness in maycomb at the time of his case and sentencing in this book. The passage also foreshadows plot points from the earlier stages of the book with the quote ” The feeling grew until the atmosphere in the courtroom was exactly the same as a cold February morning ” this line is a representation of when mad dog came earlier and the silence was also present their as well which is a great representation of foreshadowing and Semantic Fields in To Kill A Mockingbird

    Hi Lethaniel

Your dedication to your work is making me very happy. Keep up this great work.

Just a few targets to help you:

    1. Be careful with your use of
+capital letters. Remember places require a capital letter like Maycomb.

    2. A semantic field groups words together by meaning like word patterns. for example the words: Heat, sunshine beach could belong to the semantic field of holidays or warmth?

Can you identify the semantic field these words belong to:

    Cold, icy, snow=

    Pen, sharpener, pencil-case=

We will be doing this in class later
