In the book To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus is seen to be an anti-hero in many people eyes, there is many different reasons for this including him fitting into the idea of an anti hero being somebody who doesn’t conform to society, in this case being his views on racism which is completely different from the book tells us in the majority of the book, The classic example of this is Mrs Duboise who is the complete opposite to Atticus, this is shown after Atticus agrees to defend tom Robinson who happens to be a black man in court under the charge of an apparent rape that took place on a white woman, As Atticus sends scout and jem to help her, she changes in attitude and becomes nastier on them because Atticus defending Tom Robinson in a court of law. Also Atticus in my opinion is quite symbolic of a dog growling which is a representation of Atticus different views and his outrage against his society that he lives in being maycomb, This is represented in many ways but the most clever is when he use the opposite views of what he probably actually mean like when jem and scout are complaining about miss duboise actions towards them and despite this he says ” That shouldn’t take any notice of miss duboise, she is old and is only stating her opinion, it would nice if people where more open to their beliefs” this shows Atticus more moral side as well as he is teaching scout and jem tolerance for other people while is using his own ways to acknowledge the hate he is receiving, in various different ways.

i agree with most of this paragraph and how is sees atticus in the story but the only two problems i see in the paragraph is at the end it does not give any real evidence of how he acknowledge the hate that he receives and that no one in the story says or gestures towards the fact that he is an antihero they just say that he is a loyer

Lethaniel, when you say that Atticus is like the dog growling, are you talking about “Tim Johnson” the dog Atticus had to shoot? In class this week you talked to me about this and if I remember correctly you said that you felt the dog that Atticus had to shoot was like Maycomb’s prejudice and racism. This was really insightful; i will have a chat with you tomorrow so we can explore this idea further.
