In To Kill A Mockingbird one of the major setting where we learn alot about what Jem, Scout and the readers learns alot from experiences is the finch household.
In the book the finch household have a servant called calpurnia who is black but instead of having the books regular attitude of hatred towards black people, Calpurnia is treated equally and with a lot of respect to go as far as them even going to calpurnia church, This teaches us that scout and jem are learning to treat black people as equals instead of in hatred towards them which atticus is know for in the book for his less traditional views and equality for black people.
Another point in the book where we learn more about the household is at christmas where aunt alexandra and the rest of the family cone for thr christmas festivities. During dinner harper lee use a juxstapostion of putting Atticus next to her sister to show the differing opinion of black people in maycomb county with atticus being less traditional and not having a hatred towards black people compared to his sister who is a complete oppisite in her attitudes, another arguement between atticus and francis who is jem and scouts cousin who goes as far as calling him a ****er lover arises which shows us that the family has very mixed views and also tells us that francis is very explicit in the racist views that francis posses and is ruining scout and jems views by teaching them racist comments and shows the reader that their family seems to be divided between atticus’s side and Aunt alexandra side due to their different views on racism. This also shows us that jem and scout live in a family where they get mixed messages on the subject of equality in their family and in maycomb itself
Atticus is also shown to be a very tollerant men when confronted for the fact that he is defending the court, for example in the book where jem and scout go to miss duboises house she becomes less tolerant after atticus agree to defending a black man in court but with all her hatred towards him and his family he stills says that she is old and should be respected and at least she stated her opinion in the first place, this shows that atticus is a very tollerant and respectful person to the audience as he listens to other people opinion without having a go at them for it which shows scout and jem tolerence in ingorning peoples nasty views of people even though they are doing a good deed in the first place or in this context a act that he belives is right even if other dont neccessarily agree with him
In conclsion from the book we can tell that from the finch household alone we find out alot about atticus’s family and views along with the attitude overall between the family members including Jem, Scout, Atticus, Aunt Alexandra and even Scout and Jems cousin Francis
