Mr Waugh – Symbolism Of Book’s Time Period – 2/3/15

In the book their is several different interesting quotes that add a layer to the books overall ideas. For example when the court house comes into play it is described as a place where the concrete pillars aren’t supporting the weight of the courthouse and yet nobody has modified the building or add to it to expand upon what is already there which shows the county’s deliberate shone upon changing their past values and in keeping of the book with the message of racism shows that they are like this because of their traditional past values. This can also be seen in the book where it says that ” The Greek revival columns crashed with the big nineteenth century clock tower hosting a rusty unreliable instrument. This also backs up the message of staying in the past that i have already stated before which shows that the town is in a time of its own, This also shows that the county would much rather add a new building than repair the old building or take the building down and make a new courthouse. The layer of past values being kept in the book adds an understanding to the message and why the people are so against people of black origin. The only people who seem to be out of this mindset is atticus who is completely fore the ideas of a multi raced community in maycomb and even goes as for to defend a black man despite having the mindset of not completely going to be able to succeed but still trying to do it for his own morality and person ideas. Also in the book then majority of people seem to do nothing but sit on their porch and witness the day go by which shows the message of a society that would rather stay a t home and being an observer than being observed and doing something productive with their time, This could also show their ambition to stray form anything that is not a traditional value like staying at home. In conclusion i believe that the environment of places like the courthouse or even the acts from people in the county to stay away from entering new values and traditions.
