Mr Waugh – Out Of The Blue – What is the poem saying? – 1/12/14

‘Out Of The Blue’, by Simon Armitage centres on a man’s last hours during the September 11 2001 Twin Tower attack in New York (U.S.A). This Poem is written in soliloquy form and in the 1st person. The Author named Simon Armitage is a worldwide successful poet who had full intention to create the poem in the way it was written and the style which use plenty of features. For example: Punctuation to create a sense of event and breathing that the person is saying on his last inevitable hour on earth, Lines like “A bird goes by” or ” pegging out washing” shows us that this was until the attack a normal day in New York City & also the use of repetition show that the person is lost for words during the events and gives great emphasis on what is happening around him at the time. The Poem was made 7 years after the events, therefore the author (Simon Armitage) would have all his facts informed as some sort of conclusion would of been made in 7 years. The symbolism shows many details in the play like the bird going by symbolizing a normal day or even ” In fact i’am waving showing how he still thinks he is going to be saved from this attack.
