Miss Drewett – Macbeth – 13/5/14

1. Macbeth & Lady Macbeth has shifted power between themselves by changing their language like in lady macbeth using Lord to refer to macbeth which shows her love turning wrong just from this peice of language.

The Metaphors used in the Text are also representations like using The torture in the mind showing that macbeth is kind of scared of what he has done whereas lady macbeth is telling him to man up and stop moaning which is quite a large role reversal.

Another Metaphor Present in this text is: Treason has done his worst which could show this as his way of calling himself a type of treason as he has commited this crime of treason.

The last metaphor which connects to this point is ‘We have scorched the snake’ which shows that macbeth has hurt someone but he hasnt killed him which is a huge contrast compared to the other metaphors used to by macbeth.

Well done for finding metaphors in the text, they are tricky to analyse. Try to consider – why would Macbeth be using metaphors rather than being straightforward about what he means? What might this show about his state of mind? e.g. why refer to the situation as a snake rather than saying Banquo and Fleance? What do snakes make us think of? If Macbeth is thinking of snakes, what can we infer about his state of mind?

    Think about the following too:
1.How does ‘Lord’ suggest that her love is changing towards Macbeth? Changing for the better or the worse?
    2. Is the role reversal big in terms of gender stereotypes? Or have the roles changed for Lady Macbeth and Macbeth? (as Lady Macbeth has always been telling him to ‘man up’)

React!
